Today.com - Why They Suck

today.com SUCKS

You most likely know by now that Today.com canceled my account.

I have said little about it here until now for two reasons.

1) They canceled my account March 27th and I would not be paid until April 13th.
2) There were a few unpublished posts I had on my account that I wanted back.

My notice of cancellation was slightly different than those who are sharing it on their blogs. Mine said:

We regret to inform you that your VIP account with Today.com has been
canceled. We feel that your blog is no longer a good match for the
Today.com VIP program.
We wish you luck in your future blogging endeavors. Your final payment
will be sent on our next pay date: 4/10/09

Best Regards,
Today.com Support

The reason that I was extremely caught off guard was because there were no warning signs.

I had never had a pay reduction, where others had. I was still receiving the $1 per post and $2 per 1000 impressions.

That led me to believe that my blog must be working well for them, otherwise, I'd have had the pay cut that so many were complaining about.

The only thing I could think of that caused this action was that I somehow pissed them off with my last post, which they deleted.

All the post said was that they were no longer allowing us to use Entrecard because they don't allow 3rd party paid ads. I also said that this news plus the fact that at the time I didn't have a computer I could use regularly would cause me to blog less often, which made me sad.

I also had posted in the forum that I didn't understand why they were forcing us to lose Entrecard when we had the choice to deny the paid ads and that I get a big chunk of my traffic from EC.

That's it.

No big statements of distaste. No rebellious actions. I said one little thing that they didn't like and so long 30something.

When this first happened, I was beyond outraged. Then I thought, well, I had been considering giving up blogging because my computer was not working and it had become such a pain with Today.com anyway, so maybe it was a sign.

As the days passed, I started to feel this tremendous pull and guilt.

I knew there were readers who had been keeping up with various posts, but at that moment, about my grandma's party. There was guilt for just disappearing.

I knew I would really miss some of my blog friends, so there was guilt for that.

I felt guilty for ending my creative outlet.

And then, the warrior in me took over. In case you don't know, my name is Gaelic for Warrior Woman. I am pretty even-keeled, but if something pushes me too far or I feel wronged, the warrior is unleashed.

I decided that they were not going to stop me from blogging. I had learned enough from them to do it on my own. So what if I didn't have a steady pay from it, even though I could really use the money.

I was calculated in starting my blog and what little I said or did.

I was testing the waters as well.

Now that I got my last payday and got my unpublished blogs back, I have no reason to stay silent.

If they could simply cut someone like myself off with no warning, what about others who did have there pay reduced?

What about blogs like
who had regularly brought them mass amounts of traffic? Who they praised constantly?

Whether you said something minor or threw an all out tantrum, they put a target on your blog and out you go.

Less than a week after they canceled my account, they sent me an email offering me a "great rate" for advertising on Today.com.

That pissed me off! You cancel my account, do not respond to my inquiries about why I was canceled, but you are offering me a great deal to advertise on Today.com?

While I was looking for advertising opportunities, it was more for those who would advertise on my site, not vice versa.

But really, do you think I would trust them enough to pay to advertise with Today.com? Having been on the inside and seen the issues they were having with advertising and the way they treat their bloggers, do you really think I would give them money and expect them to do what they say they will?

Today.com offers false advertisement and censorship. They offer great money making opportunities, but they lie. They limit what you can do, who you can network with, what you can say, how you can say it and they DO NOT pay the $2 ppm like they say. They only pay for traffic from places they think worthy of paying. Other traffic generators do not get you paid at all or you get a lower rate.

They want you to peddle goods with their affiliate links. They want you to refer others to them. But you say one thing questioning their decisions and they cancel your account without warning.

They make your account inactive, not your blog. They can assign someone to take over your blog! If you leave on your own accord or they throw you out, they not only take your content, they take your reputation as a blogger and can do what they want with your blog going forward.

DO NOT BLOG FOR TODAY.com! They mislead you and then steal your content. DO NOT ADVERTISE WITH TODAY.com unless you want no results and you want to be affiliated with a company that is dishonest and CENSORS its writers!

One of the things that really upsets me about being locked out of my account, even 3 weeks later, is that I have no access to my comments.

What I mean is that there are some regular readers who did not have a blog to link back to, they only left an email address with their name and now, I have no way to find them and tell them that I am still here.

In addition to that, I am mad that I cannot get those emails for comments I still get regarding my ductogram and biopsy last fall.

I still get comments from women who are told they need a ductogram and are looking to find out what the experience is like and for an outlet. I respond to them via email and have often developed a friendship. I have no way to respond to them now. That actually hurts me.

I did try to leave a comment on my last post to tell people where I am, but the Today.com Nazi's deleted it.

Flit over at Just Flitting has posted some things you should do if you have been exiled like we have or if you fear you will be....

Since I could not do some of these things BEFORE leaving, I did what I could after the fact. I have copied and saved all my old posts in case they go belly-up. I also went through a ton of my comments on there clicking on the links to let those bloggers know where I am now in case they didn't already find me.

I also deleted all my photobucket photos that were on there to make it look as ugly as possible.

Those of us who were exiled or left knowing they eventually would be have banned together. Many of us have created blogrolls of Today.com exiles. Hospitalera has a post listing those of us that left. Lost for a reason has a post with a huge thread of comments from ex-today bloggers. (Check out the Today blogroll to the right for more)

There is even a blog for those of us that have been exiled, Today.com Exiles.

I still visit some of the Today blogs because I like those blogs, but more importantly I like those bloggers. I won't punish them for what Today.com has done.

I feel your pain. I was only able to grab a few of my old posts on Nipplelicious, and only one on my mother blog. Still waiting for my last pay, I'll believe it when I see it. As for someone else writing as me, good luck. I am so disappointed in Today, I regret ever telling anyone how good they were.

Ihave 2 blogs with today and was very disappointed with the EC removal. Now they say you can have it, with no paid ads, but they won't count the traffic. 2 weeks after removing my widget I got the notice that my pay would be cut to the $2 ppm but I would no longer get the $1 per post. I didn't post that much to either but now I'm not wure what to do with them. I'm not trying to start over with them and already have 2 others on blogger. It sucks that they keep your content. I may just copy it all and wait and see...

Glad you got out and glad I found you here:)

What a pity and it seems very unfair. I always enjoyed your blog and also read about your Grandma and the birthday party. I hope all is going well and I'm sure you'll do fine without them.

it definitely made life easier to know that the boom was probably about to be lowered.

They haven't clued into my kids' new accounts yet, so their accounts are still active- I have been updating links and pulling content but slowly so that the idjits at Today are less likely to notice (I got tossed because I was updating a whole lot of links all at once on flitting of fiction - even got a personalized error message)

I was never a member of Today.com but I have certainly followed the problems that you all are experiencing. I hope you exiles will maintain statistics on the number of Today.com members who leave versus those who stay. Also, how many new members Today.com is able to attract given all this furor. It would be really interesting to see what is going on "behind the scenes" with organizations like Today.com (and Entrecard) that cause them to make decisions that so thoroughly antagonize so many of their best customers. I am mystified.

oh, am sorry to hear about all these Kelly. I actually followed you at blogger :), I had been meaning to move to be able to revise and edit my posts. i am not all surprised with how they treat all of us, i feel like it is so much of authoritarian, we could not voice our comments at all. maybe, if they find me leaving comments here agreeing with you, they would delete my account too.

thanks for sharing all these, it really should serve as an eye opener for those who still stay there.

I have a Today.com blog but the boom hasn't lowered yet, just the mass pay cut a lot of people saw. I started a new From Huskies to Husbands because I know it is coming. I can't get over the e-mail they sent you!!

Come visit me at http://fromhuskiestohusbands.blogspot.com if you want :)

You sound really mad... That must have really sucked huh? Cutting you off without a warning.. I would despise them too if I'm given such treatment. It's just so unfair..
I'm so sorry.. I hope you'll be able to find a better one. :)

The sad thing is that many of us could have worked through our differences or left in a friendly manner without the ugliness. A little respect coming from the top down and honesty would have gone a long way toward making their bloggers satisfied, if not happy. And, if they had let people leave in an orderly fashion and kept their "I'm leaving" messages, I think few if any of the today.com exiles would have been upset enough to speak up.

Whoops!

As I've said before, just that level of mismanagement should be a sign that today.com is not a good company to "work" for.

Hi-
I became quite disillusioned by the whole Today.com administration, myself. They really were too "control freak" for my liking and in my opinion made poor business decisions. I walked away from my today.com blog ... I'm no longer interested in making money for them!
Good luck with your new blog! Your an excellent writer and have terrific success!!!

I'm glad I read this post. I've been considering doing some posting with them and have been researching. Yours is not the first story of this kind of read. Thanks for spearing me the headache.

Wow. I had no idea it was that crazy with Today.com. I started a blog with them in January, but rarely update it, so.... I guess it's not on their radar.

Sorry that this happened to you! I don't know what I'd do if Blogger flipped out one day and decided to delete my blog(s). I know I would be furious.

Hope that you are able to recover from this. It really does suck!

I’m not sure why but you have really captured my attention. I may end up bailing on today.com soon. I am very incompetent at driving traffic and have only a hand full of people who read my stuff but I would like to keep what few readers I have. While I have only been blogging for a few months I have never made a dime and don’t really see how I will. Does blogger pay you for postings? If by chance you have any advice, suggestions or comments/information I would be very greatful, I like the way you write sister. You seem to really speak you’re your heart. dannydissent@yahoo.com I do have a blogger site its http://lazospeaks.blogspot.com/ but I’ve neglected it because I haven’t learned how to navigate and manage my blog well. Anyway thanx for your posting, you have got me thinking I need to do something. I just don’t know what yet. Do you know if it is acceptable to post the same copy to both sites? Thanx much for your posting.

Kelly, I am so glad I found you and others by following everyones links. I had no idea that others were as upset as I was, and that so many different things had caused the problems. I'm so glad I looked into this and spent the past hour "stealing" back my content to use at a later date. I have already used a few of my things - as mine is a recipe site - they are NOT copyrighting recipes that belong to others. Not even happening. haha

I definitely need to tell my story, so its just a matter of getting it written and posted.

I decided to write for another blog network again. I looked at Today.com but when I found the porn ad (which they know about and continue to keep on the site) I knew they were not the kind of network I want anything to do with. I posted about them to my personal blog, with a screen capture of the adult ad they run.

My story with Today.com is too long to post on here but I'll give you the latest. Payday as we all know is the 10th which fell on a Sunday so we were all told we'd be paid on Monday the 11th. On Friday the eighth we have an alert on our VIP stats saying that if we made $600 or more for the year which includes awards/bonuses we'd have to submit a w9 before we were paid. Because I did receive an award in March it took me close to that amount but I sent the w9 to them on Friday evening to an address in PA. It doesn't take more than three days to arrive in PA from California. Long story short I still have not been paid. I've contacted support, I've posted on the forums which is a total waste etc...Still no one has contacted me. I thought about it and realized I hadn't posted on either of my two blogs since mid April so it was getting close to the time where they would become inactive. So, I blurbed 100 or so words on each. I've told them they have until Friday to pay me or - well let's just say I have friends who are attorneys.

I'm disgusted by all I am reading about them. To lock out their bloggers is criminal as far as I'm concerned. I was waiting to speak up about all of this until I was paid for the last time but at this point I couldn't take it anymore.

They are either one of two things. Stupid or criminal. Maybe a little of both.

Thanks for listening to me vent.

Hi Kelly,

I haven't quite been locked out of my account yet, even though I've left goodbye posts on both of my blogs. :)

Today has totally disgusted me with how they have treated their bloggers. I check the forums there frequently and they are pretty much dead.

My today blogs were Single Frugalton and Storytime for Children, but I now can be found at

http://www.livingfrugalandsimple.com

and

http://www.childrensbooksforstorytime.com

I'd love to be added to your list! :)

finally I found someone with the same sentiments.

YES... I have a today.com account and it is still there but I no longer blogging for it.

I wanted to get all my post and transfer them to my other blogs but I dont know how. And to say the least... I was not even paid for any of those post. I believe I already earned 47$ and their minimum pay off is 50$, and then they told me that the other posts will not be paid because there was a problem with the date of posting.

Anyway, I just want to ask you if you know how I can get all my write up or is there a way I could transfer them to my other blogs.

My today account is http://changingseasons.today.com and you are in my links too.

Thanks in advance.
